We have several lovely carers. They are attentive to our needs, they're always very cheerful and happy when they come in and above all very compassionate, which I think is an important quality for a carer to have.

They (carers) were punctual, professional, good cooks and most of all caring and human. We always felt very comfortable with them in our house. Unique Senior Care were very efficient in providing us with such good carers and were very responsive when our requirements changed at short notice.

John R (Husband of Client)

The team at Unique Care are simply the best as my late father would say, their attention to detail and ability to change the care my dad received from week to week was amazing. I can't thank them enough, I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Anthony B (Son of Client)

Unique Senior Care has been a real help with my dad, who has just reached the time when he needed to get some extra help at home. He has been very happy with the homecarers and they have all done a brilliant job... The staff and supervisors have all been very understanding, and all admin has been handled super efficiently.

Joy M (Daughter of Client)

From day one, they took the time to understand our family's situation and created a high-quality, personalised care plan that fits our needs perfectly... caregivers like Grace and Naheed - along with the rest of their unique team - are incredibly kind, warm, and friendly. They make a stressful situation so much easier. Their communication is excellent and they keep us constantly informed and are always quick to respond to any questions.

Steven S (Son of Client)

The onboarding was made particularly easy, and the selection of a small team of carers made the process both easy for ourselves and, more importantly, for mum. The team in Kenilworth are thorough, proactive and communication between the parties has been excellent. Thank you for helping mum get the most enjoyment from continuing to live independently (with a little help!) at home.

C K (Son of Client)

All four carers that have helped me with my husband, who has advanced Dementia, could not be kinder. One plays cards with him so patiently, one cleans windows beautifully, and two notice things that may not be on the list I leave and just do them. I would not be happy or able to continue with my hobby if I did not feel comfortable leaving my husband with all these lovely carers.

What is personal care at home?

Personal care at home means having help with private, everyday routines when they become difficult to manage alone. This can include washing and bathing, getting dressed, going to the toilet, oral care, looking after your hair and skin, and help with eating or drinking.

But families don't always describe what they need as “personal care”.

You might simply have noticed that Mum isn't washing as often as she used to. Dad may need help getting dressed because buttons, socks or shoes have become difficult. Or perhaps someone can manage most things themselves but now needs a steady hand when getting to the toilet or getting ready for bed.

Personal care can range from a little prompting or help with one part of someone's routine to more hands-on care. The aim is to provide the help that's needed while encouraging someone to continue doing what they comfortably can for themselves.

What types of personal care can a carer help with?

Personal care looks different for everyone. Someone might only need help with washing and dressing in the morning, while someone else may need support with several parts of their daily routine. Before care starts, we get to know what they can manage themselves, where they need help and how they like things done. Depending on their needs, a carer can help with:

  • Washing, bathing and showering: from a little help to feel safer in the shower or bath to more hands-on support with washing.

  • Getting dressed and undressed: help with getting dressed, including clothes, buttons, fastenings, socks and shoes.

  • Hair, grooming and skin care: help with things like washing or brushing hair, shaving, applying everyday skin care and getting ready for the day.

  • Continence and personal hygiene: sensitive continence care and help staying clean, comfortable and feeling like themselves.

  • Morning and evening routines: bringing together the help someone needs to get washed, dressed and ready for the day or settled comfortably for the evening.

  • Going to the toilet: discreet help getting to and using the toilet when someone is finding this more difficult on their own.

  • Nail care: help with everyday nail care where it's safe for a carer to provide it. If specialist foot or nail care is needed, we'll let you know.

  • Eating and drinking: help or reminders to eat and drink where someone is finding this difficult to manage independently.

  • Getting in and out of bed and moving around: mobility support to help someone move around their home and manage everyday routines more safely.

  • Teeth and dentures: help or gentle reminders with brushing teeth, cleaning dentures and everyday oral care.

How does personal care at home work?

Personal care isn't a separate type of care that you need to arrange on its own. At Unique Care, it forms part of an Hourly Care or Live-in Care arrangement, depending on when and how often someone needs help.

Personal care with Hourly Care or visiting care

Hourly Care, sometimes referred to as visiting care or domiciliary care, can work well when someone needs personal care at particular times of day.

For example, a carer might visit in the morning to help with washing and dressing, with another visit later in the day to help with toileting, changing clothes or an evening routine.

Our Hourly Care visits are a minimum of one hour, giving carers time to provide personal care without rushing someone through their routine. Visits are planned around the person's needs and usual routines.

Personal care with Live-in Care

If someone needs broader support throughout the day, personal care can form part of a Live-in Care arrangement.

A live-in carer lives in the person's home and can help with washing, dressing, toileting, mobility and other agreed personal care alongside wider support such as preparing meals, medication support, companionship and everyday routines.

Live-in Care isn't waking night care or continuous 24-hour care. If someone has significant or repeated care needs during the night, talk to us about what's happening so we can discuss the appropriate options.
