Supporting someone physically – whether it’s helping them stand, reposition in bed, or use a hoist – is part of everyday care. But that doesn’t mean it always feels straightforward.
We know that even experienced Caregivers sometimes pause and think, “Is this the safest way to do it?” or “Is there something I’ve forgotten?” And for anyone new to care, moving and handling can feel like one of the trickiest parts to get right.
That’s why we’ve put together a new series of short videos, led by Jo Cleary, our Learning and Development Manager, who brings 26 years of experience in health and social care, including nearly 14 years leading our training in best practices for older care.
Each one focuses on a different moving and handling situation. They’re designed to be simple, practical, and based on real care tasks our teams support every day.
Whether you’re a Caregiver, family member, or part of a wider support team, these videos are here to help you feel more confident and make safe, comfortable care just a little easier.
Why we created this series
There’s no shortage of training out there, but we wanted something that felt real. Something that shows what support actually looks like in a home care setting, using the equipment and techniques we know people come across every day.
Jo Cleary, our Learning and Development Manager, said:
“These videos are designed to be simple and easy to follow, based on best practice and the kinds of everyday tasks our Caregivers come across all the time. The aim is to offer clear, practical guidance that people can feel confident putting into action.”
This series isn’t a replacement for full training, but it is a helpful way to reinforce good practice, refresh your memory, or explore something you’re not yet confident with. What’s included
Each video focuses on one specific situation. No jargon, no long explanations, just a clear walkthrough of the key steps. We’ll be covering things like:
- Using handling equipment safely and calmly
- Supporting someone to transfer from bed to chair, or from sitting to standing
- Repositioning in bed
- Car transfers
- Helping with dressing and undressing
They’re short, practical, and filmed with the same care and dignity we use in real visits. The idea is to take some of the worry out of these moments and show there is a safe, manageable way through.

Who the videos are for
All of our Caregivers begin with a thorough induction, which includes a dedicated moving and handling module. It’s a key part of how we make sure care is safe, consistent, and based on best practice right from the start.
These videos build on that foundation, offering a useful refresher and a way to keep good habits going strong.
These videos are for anyone who’s involved in care, whether that’s at home as a family member or as part of a professional team. If you’ve ever felt unsure about the safest way to support someone, or you’re just looking for a quick reminder of the best approach, they’re for you.
And for our Caregivers, they’re also a way to feel supported between training sessions. As Jo said:
“No-one’s expected to remember every detail from a training day. That’s why follow-up support matters. These videos are another tool to help you feel steady and safe in your work.”
Making care a little bit easier
Moving and handling is about more than just technique. It’s about protecting the person you’re supporting, and yourself, from harm. It also involves noticing when someone’s anxious, giving them time, and keeping dignity at the centre of it all.
Done well, it can be one of the most reassuring parts of care. Done awkwardly or under pressure, it can quickly become uncomfortable or even unsafe.
These videos aim to take the pressure off. To say, “You’re not expected to know everything, and here’s a clear, calm way to do it.”

When and where to watch
The first video in the series will be shared this Friday, with more to follow in the coming weeks. We’ll post them on our social channels, and they’ll also be available to watch on our YouTube channel and Learning Centre.
You can watch them in your own time, whether you’re getting ready for a visit, supporting a loved one at home, or simply wanting to brush up on best practice.
Supporting you in everyday care
Care is full of moving parts. From chairs and wheelchairs to beds and bathrooms, so much of our work involves supporting people to move safely and comfortably.
These videos are just one more way we’re here to support that. If you’re a family member or loved one and want to build confidence with moving and handling at home, you’re very welcome to join one of our in-person training sessions. Just get in touch with Jo Cleary at [email protected].
