Choosing home care for a parent is never a simple decision. Many families begin the journey hoping the support will make life easier — only to discover that not every care experience feels reassuring or consistent.
Heather experienced this first-hand while arranging support for her mum. After a difficult experience with a previous agency, she began looking for care that would feel calmer, more reliable and more personal.
This is the story of how consistent Caregivers, longer visits and a relationship-led approach to care made a meaningful difference to her mum’s daily life — and gave Heather the peace of mind she had been searching for.
When Care Visits Left Heather Worried
Heather speaks to her mum every day.
So she always knew when something wasn’t right.
When her mum was receiving care from a previous agency, the evenings often brought difficult phone calls.
“If it hadn’t gone well, she’d be upset on the phone,” Heather remembers.
For Heather, the hardest part was not knowing how to put things right. Her mum clearly needed support at home, but the care visits she was receiving simply were not working.
Thankfully, those phone calls no longer happen.
Meet Heather and Her Mum
Heather lives just half a mile away from her mum in, so they have always been close.
Over time, her mum’s care needs have increased significantly.
After a knee replacement many years ago, the joint eventually wore out and needed replacing again. Unfortunately, an infection developed in the replacement joint. Despite treatment, the infection became severe enough that her mum eventually needed an amputation.
Since then, she has been a full-time wheelchair user and needs regular support throughout the day with mobility, transfers and daily tasks.
As her health changed, the level of care increased gradually as well.

Care Overview
Heather’s mum now receives regular home care support throughout the day, including:
Five care visits each day
Minimum one-hour care visits
Support with transfers and mobility
Help with meals and daily routines
Consistent Caregivers who know her well
For someone with complex needs, this consistency and structure are essential.
Why the Previous Care Arrangement Didn’t Work
Before joining Unique Senior Care, Heather’s mum was supported by a different care agency.
But the experience quickly became stressful.
The biggest challenges were:
Too many different Caregivers visiting
Inconsistent arrival times
Short visits that felt rushed
Heather explains that her mum relies heavily on routine and predictability.
If visits arrived too early or too late, it could cause significant anxiety and make the whole experience unsettling.
The Difference Longer Visits Made
When Heather’s mum began receiving care from Unique Senior Care, one change stood out immediately.
Each visit lasted a minimum of one hour. Previously, the family had experienced much shorter visits, which can sometimes lead to tasks feeing rushed or more ‘practical’ than having the time to really build relationships.
Heather noticed the difference straight away.
“From the get-go it was definitely a better fit.”
Instead of rushing in and out, Caregivers had time to build a genuine relationship with her mum.
The pace of the visits became calmer and more relaxed, which had a noticeable impact on her mum’s wellbeing.

Taking Time to Calm Anxiety First
Some days, the Caregivers arrive and Heather’s mum may already be feeling anxious about something that has happened while she has been alone.
In those moments, the visit does not begin with tasks.
Instead, the Caregivers take time to sit down, talk with her and understand what is worrying her.
Only once she feels calmer do they move on to the practical support she needs.
Heather believes this patience is one of the biggest differences in the care her mum now receives.
Caregivers Who Truly Know Her Mum
Consistency has also played a huge role in making the care successful.
The team now knows Heather’s mum well enough to understand which Caregivers are the best match for her personality and routine.
This familiarity means the visits feel comfortable rather than disruptive.
The Caregivers know:
How she likes her day to begin
When she may be feeling anxious
The best way to support her transfers and mobility
For Heather, this level of understanding provides enormous reassurance.

“You Get What You Pay For”
Heather is open about something many families worry about when exploring care — the cost.
At first glance, some care providers may appear cheaper than ours.
It’s not something we shy away from because we know the quality of care that sets us apart. Heather’s experience has shown that the quality of care makes all the difference.
“Yes, it is more expensive, but you get what you pay for at the end of the day.”
For Heather, knowing that her mum is supported by Caregivers who genuinely care is worth the investment.
Small Moments That Show Real Care
One moment in particular stands out to Heather. Because her mum uses a wheelchair and struggles to lift her head easily, the Caregivers kneel down so they are at her eye level when they speak to her.
They ask how she is feeling and how her day has been before beginning any tasks.
It is a small gesture, but it says a lot.
For Heather, it shows the difference between care that is rushed – and care that is truly thoughtful.
Care That Feels Like Extended Family
Over time, the relationship between Heather’s mum and her Caregivers has grown into something much more personal.
Heather describes the team as feeling like an extended family.
She says you can see that the Caregivers genuinely care about the people they support and want them to have the best day possible, even when they are living with serious health challenges.

The Peace of Mind Families Are Really Looking For
For Heather, the biggest change is simple. Those upsetting evening phone calls no longer happen.
Instead, she knows her mum is supported by Caregivers who understand her routine, take the time to listen, and treat her with patience and respect.
For any family supporting an older parent, that kind of peace of mind makes a huge difference.
