Why Preventative Health Matters
Season 1 • Episode 4 • 39:48
We all want ourselves and our loved ones to live long, fulfilling lives. But more than that, we want to feel well while we do it. Especially as we age, the small choices we make today can shape our health in the years to come. That’s the heart of what this episode of The Care Podcast explores with special guest Dominique Kent, CEO of Bluecrest Wellness and a passionate advocate for preventative health.
If you’re wondering how to stay independent, avoid unnecessary hospital visits, or simply take control of your wellbeing, this blog is for you.

Who are Bluecrest Wellness?
Founded in 2012, Bluecrest Wellness is a UK-based health screening company that makes private health checks more accessible and affordable. Their mission is simple: to help people take control of their health before problems arise.
They offer a wide range of comprehensive health assessments at over 2,000 pop-up clinics nationwide, with options tailored to individual needs, lifestyles, and risks. Each check includes a personal health report and optional follow-up with a qualified GP.
Bluecrest works with individuals, employers, and insurers—and aims to complement the NHS by detecting preventable conditions early and supporting people in living healthier, longer lives.
What is preventative health—and why does it matter?
Preventative health is about spotting potential issues before they become problems. It’s not just about treating illness after it happens; it helps you stay one step ahead. That means learning what’s going on inside your body, understanding your personal risk factors, and taking small, proactive steps that support long-term wellbeing.
As Dominique puts it:
“Take your health into your hands and own it... You’ll put yourself on the path to living healthier for longer. And who wouldn’t want that?”
This mindset shift from reacting to symptoms to preventing them is a powerful one. It helps people stay independent for longer, reduces the need for complex treatment later, and feel more in control of their health journey as they age.

The power of early health screening
During the podcast, Dom shared a powerful example: a woman who came to Bluecrest Wellness for a routine health check and was immediately flagged for urgent medical support. Within half an hour, she was diverted for further investigation. That early intervention may well have saved her life.
But not every health issue is that dramatic. Most people discover manageable concerns—like borderline blood pressure, low vitamin D, or early signs of prediabetes. Armed with this knowledge, they can make simple changes:
- Adjust their diet
- Improve sleep and hydration
- Reduce sugar intake
- Increase physical activity
Dom also highlighted how many people go on to reduce their metabolic age or even reverse early indicators of illness.
Why don’t more people get health checks?
Despite the clear benefits, many people still avoid routine health checks. A 2024 report by the National Audit Office found that only 44% of eligible adults in England have taken up their free NHS Health Check since 2019.
Why the hesitation?
- Fear of bad news can be overwhelming.
- Embarrassment—especially around certain types of screening—can stop people from booking.
- And for many of us caring for others, we simply put ourselves last.
But as Dom shared, this mindset can carry a bigger cost:
“If you pick something up early enough, the treatment can be quick and easy... But if you don’t, you could be living with a life-changing condition.”
The truth is, the sooner you act, the more options you have—and often, the easier they are.

What’s the difference between NHS checks and private health assessments?
The NHS offers important health checks, but they are focused on those aged 40 to 74 without pre-existing conditions. The free NHS Health Check is offered every five years and includes:
- A blood pressure check
- Blood tests to check cholesterol and sometimes blood sugar levels
- BMI measurement
- Questions about your lifestyle, including smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, and family history
These checks are designed to spot early signs of:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Type 2 diabetes
- Kidney disease
- Certain types of dementia
However, NHS checks are limited in scope and frequency. Services like Bluecrest Wellness complement this by offering more in-depth assessments that can include:
- Metabolic age
- Vitamin and mineral profiles
- Liver and kidney function
- Advanced cardiovascular and cancer risk indicators
They’re also available to a wider age range and can often be tailored to your personal risk factors.
And for those concerned about cost, many private services can be spread out with monthly payments to make them more accessible.
The aim isn’t to replace the NHS—but to work alongside it. As Dom explained:
“We see an opportunity to partner with the NHS… helping people take control of their health to prevent long-term issues”
A realistic, simple approach
You don’t have to overhaul your life to feel better. Dom emphasises that small, sustainable changes can have a meaningful impact—especially when guided by real health data. Her advice is full of common-sense, achievable steps:
- Eat more leafy greens and fibre-rich foods to support heart and gut health
- Understand your vitamin and mineral levels to spot deficiencies before they cause issues
- Make time for regular movement, even if it’s a daily walk or stretching routine
- Track your vital numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
- Choose home testing kits if attending in-person appointments feels daunting
One of the key messages from the podcast is that health improvements don’t have to mean drastic change. Dom shared how she personally tweaked her daily meals, boosted hydration, and started paying closer attention to sleep and stress—all small shifts that added up to a noticeably healthier lifestyle.
The goal isn’t perfection - it’s progress. And yes, you can still enjoy life’s pleasures. As Dom puts it with a smile: “You don’t have to give up cake!”

Why this matters for carers and older adults
Carers often give everything to support someone else—but that can come at the cost of their own health. Prioritising your wellbeing isn’t selfish. It’s essential. As Dom reminded us, when you feel stronger, you’re better equipped to keep going for those who rely on you.
Preventative health checks can also offer peace of mind. Whether you're caring for someone or ageing yourself, knowing your health status can help you make informed decisions. It means you can spot small issues before they turn into crises—and take action while you still have options.
For older adults, this can be the difference between staying independent at home or facing a sudden hospital stay. For carers, it means reducing stress, planning ahead, and feeling more in control.
In both cases, preventative care isn’t just about health—it’s about freedom, confidence, and quality of life.
