Royal Recognition For Our Live-in Caregiver Training!

We’re over the moon to share some exciting news! Unique Senior Care has won a Princess Royal Training Award - for the third time! This time round, it’s in recognition of the way we prepare our live-in Caregivers to step into someone’s home with confidence, compassion and care.

While it’s always nice to celebrate recognition like this, what means more is that is shows families that we take our responsibilities seriously. That when we say we train our Caregivers to the highest standards, we really mean it. And now that’s been recognised nationally!

In this blog, we’ll share what this award means, what our training involves, and why it should give you extra peace of mind if you’re considering live-in care.

What is the Princess Royal Training Award?

The Princess Royal Training Awards are given by the City & Guilds Foundation and personally endorsed by HRH The Princess Royal. They recognise organisations across the UK who show exceptional commitment to training and development that really makes a difference.

Every application is carefully assessed by an expert panel, and the process includes a full written submission, supporting evidence, and a formal interview. They want to know what your training actually achieves, not just what it looks like on paper. That means demonstrating its impact and a clear commitment to learning and development that makes a difference to people’s lives.

Our team works tirelessly to ensure that our training is industry-leading, that Caregivers feel prepared and supported, and that this translates in outstanding care for our clients. This latest win reflects the care, thought and hard work that goes into preparing our live-in Caregivers for the reality of the role.

We’re so grateful and proud of every one of our team members, from our amazing learning and development team who design and deliver such great training, to our exceptional operations team who put it all in practice and our brilliant support teams behind the scenes who make it all possible.

Why training matters - especially in live-in care

Live-in care is a big step as you're not just asking someone to help out with practical tasks, you're inviting them to share your home, routines, and sometimes very personal moments. Naturally, that raises some big questions.

Will they understand Mum’s dementia? Will they know what to do if something changes suddenly? Can they really handle the emotional side of things, not just the practical? Are they trustworthy?

These worries are completely valid. In fact, they’re exactly why we redesigned our training from the ground up. A few years ago, we realised our old induction just wasn’t giving Caregivers the preparation they deserved. New recruits told us they needed more time to build confidence, and families wanted reassurance that Caregivers were ready for the realities of the role. So we listened, and completely redesigned our induction into the five-day, face-to-face programme we have today.

Our five-day, face-to-face induction covers everything a live-in Caregiver needs to know before they step into someone’s home. That means practical skills like supporting someone to move safely, managing medication, and helping with things like personal care.

But they’re also trained on the softer skills too, like how to respond if someone’s distressed in the night, how to communicate with someone living with dementia, and how to build trust when you’re living under the same roof. The are all essential parts of what makes care feel safe, consistent and kind from day one.

Caregivers train in small groups, guided by experienced trainers who understand the reality of care. Everything is grounded in real scenarios they’ll come across in someone’s home. And because we work closely with each person during the week, we can offer the right support at the right time, helping them build both skill and confidence.

During induction we also assess each Caregiver carefully, making sure they demonstrate our values, engage fully with the learning, and show the right approach. Only those who meet these standards continue on to work with families. This means the Caregivers who arrive in your home have already shown they’re ready to provide consistent, reliable support, giving families extra confidence and peace of mind.

In short, we give our Caregivers the tools, the knowledge and the emotional resilience to do the job well, and to do it in a way that genuinely helps you or your loved one feel safe, comfortable and cared for.

We firmly believe that when families welcome a live-in Caregiver from Unique Senior Care, they should feel confident knowing that person has been properly prepared and that starts right here, with how we train them.

What this means for you

What families tell us they want above all else is reassurance: that their loved one will be safe, treated with dignity, and supported by someone who cares enough to do the job well.

Because our Caregivers are fully prepared before they arrive, care feels calmer and more consistent. There are fewer handovers, stronger relationships, and a better understanding of what your loved one needs day to day. Families often say they feel a weight lifted once care starts, as they can truly sense that their Caregiver understands what they need.

Our Learning and Development Manager, Jo Cleary, said: “Induction is so much more than covering the basics. It’s about making sure people feel confident and supported before they ever step into someone’s home. Over the five days we give Caregivers time to practise, to ask questions, and to talk honestly about what the job is really like - the challenges as well as the rewards. The bit I love most is watching the change that happens during the week. People often arrive on day one feeling nervous, but by the end they leave knowing they’re ready, that they belong here, and that they can really make a difference for the families they’ll be supporting.”

One family shared how a Caregiver helped their loved one with Alzheimer’s return home after a short stay in residential care. With the right support in place, they began sleeping better, eating well again, and regaining weight. The outcome of this meant that only the client’s wellbeing improved, but her daughters did too. She no longer has to spend her days worrying as she knows she's in the safe and capable hands of her Caregiver.

It all starts with the right preparation

Winning this award is something we’re truly proud of. It's also a promise to every family we support. It shows that the Caregiver who comes to live with your loved one has been carefully and thoughtfully prepared, not just to do the job, but to do it with kindness, confidence and care.

We’ll never stop learning, listening and improving, because care is always about people first. And when you’re making such an important decision for someone you love, you deserve to know they’re in safe hands.
