What is specialist and complex care at home?
Specialist and complex care at home provides additional support for people whose needs require more experience, planning, training or oversight than straightforward day-to-day care.
What is specialist care at home?
Specialist care is support tailored around a particular condition, disability or set of needs and how these affect someone’s everyday life.
For example, a condition may affect someone’s mobility, communication, memory, personal care or ability to manage everyday routines safely.
This can mean their care needs more careful planning, or a carer with relevant experience or additional training. It is the person’s individual needs, rather than their diagnosis alone, that determine the support they require.
What is complex care?
Complex care is support for someone whose needs are more involved, or who has several needs that have to be considered and managed together.
For example, their needs may change over time, involve specialist equipment or mean their personal care needs to be coordinated with nurses or other healthcare professionals.
Unique Senior Care provides personal care and day-to-day support, not nursing care. Where nursing care is also needed at home, it is provided by the appropriate healthcare professionals alongside the care we provide.
When might someone need specialist or complex care?
Someone may need specialist or complex care when their condition, disability or combination of needs means their day-to-day care requires additional knowledge, planning, training or coordination. This might include someone who:
- is living with several long-term conditions or needs that affect one another
- needs care adapted around significant changes to their mobility, communication, memory or other everyday abilities
- has more involved or changing personal care, continence or mobility needs
- uses specialist equipment as part of their everyday care
- needs support with healthcare tasks such as PEG feeding, catheter or stoma care, where these can be appropriately delegated to a trained and competent carer
- needs their day-to-day care coordinated with nurses, therapists or other healthcare professionals
There is no single condition, diagnosis or task that automatically means someone needs specialist or complex care. Two people living with the same condition can have very different needs, so we look at the individual, how their needs affect everyday life and the level of support they require.
Some people with complex needs also need nursing or clinical care. Our carers can provide personal care and day-to-day support alongside the healthcare professionals responsible for their clinical care, helping different parts of their support work together at home.
How can we help with specialist and complex care?
Our specialist care is tailored around the individual, with carers matched according to the experience and skills needed to support their condition, disability or more complex needs. Depending on the person, support can include:
- washing, dressing and other personal care
- continence care and support with using the toilet
- help with moving safely around the home
- medication support as agreed in the care plan
- preparing meals and support with eating and drinking
